There are many different kinds of home additions, but this is certainly the most popular. Bump out home additions are minimalistic and efficient; they add just that extra bit of space that is sorely needed in your home. These kinds of home additions are the most popular because they are fast, effective, and the advantages are immediately apparent. Many kitchens and bathrooms, for instance, eventually call for bump out additions because homeowners want more features in their home. For example, we recently finished a kitchen bump out addition in Silver Spring, MD. Our clients wanted to add a dining and seating area to their kitchen but didn’t have the space in the existing floor plan. By adding a relatively small bump out addition we were able to make room for a dining table, seating, and even increased storage. This simple improvement made a big difference in the kitchen and our clients were thrilled with the results.
There are a few hidden benefits of multiple bump out home additions. First, if the additions are cantilevered, since they do not expand the foundation, they may not be subject to some of the more stringent building codes that run up costs on some projects. Second, multiple bump out home additions don’t need to be built all at the same time. It’s best if there is an overall plan or design for the additions to be built at a later time, but these can be built months or even years apart as your needs expand.
When you picture home additions, room size home additions are probably what you image. It is indisputable that room sized home additions add the most value, both to your family’s lifestyle and your home’s market value. These are the two biggest benefits of room size home additions:
1) For resale purposes, adding square footage indisputably adds value to your home. After all, square footage is the main tool real estate appraisers use in putting a market value to your home.
2) Boosting the square footage also impacts your family and how you interact with each other. An extra gathering space, a larger kitchen in which everyone can gather round while the Thanksgiving turkey’s cooked, a family room large enough for all your friends and family to watch the Super Bowl together; all these improvements make your h
ome more livable, enjoyable and valuable.
Sometimes our clients already have all the space they might need but it just isn’t used efficiently or how they would like it to be. A client in McLean, VA wanted to convert her garage into a guest suite for when her family visited; another client in Potomac, MD had a deck that already provided substantial infrastructure for a main floor expansion. These types of additions, or, rather, conversions, can often provide all the benefits of a full size home addition at a much lower cost.
