Let’s face it: kitchen remodeling is not a simple or quick process. And it shouldn’t be. The kitchen remodel is the most popular home remodeling project all across Virginia, especially in Vienna, McLean, and Great Falls. For many people the kitchen remodel is one of the biggest projects they will have done on their home. We understand how important kitchens are for the family and the home and so we are committed to making sure everything is exactly right. A kitchen remodel may take time, but most good things do!
We’ve put together a description of our kitchen remodeling process so that you can better understand what exactly it is we will be doing at every step along the way. You should never have to walk in your door and not know what work is being done on your home. At Signature we inform our clients of what we are working on at all times and they’re happier for it. So take a look at our eight-step process and give us a call to schedule a complimentary design consultation to get your own process started!
Every jurisdiction, whether it is Vienna, VA, McLean, VA or Great Falls, VA has different permit and building plan requirements. We make sure to fulfill each of these. The first thing we do is get the structural, mechanical, electrical and plumbing plans ready. The plans might then be taken to outside engineers to be reviewed.
Safety is the most important issue we keep in mind as we begin to work in your home. Throughout the project, the kitchen may become a surprisingly unsafe environment. We make sure to cordon off the kitchen to ensure that your children or pets don’t enter while work is being done.
Additionally, it’s impossible to completely prevent some dust and dirt, but we take every step we can to prevent it from spreading into the home’s living spaces. Two things we do: we install barriers against dust at every kitchen exit point, and we also make sure to protect the floor anywhere we might have to pass over.
Once your home is properly prepared, we start by disconnecting the water, gas and electrical lines. Next, we remove all the old countertops, cabinets, etc. Squaring, or framing, the room is very important. This process involves making sure that the walls and floors are perfectly straight and meet at uniform angles. You might be surprised how many homes, even in Great Falls, McLean and Vienna, have uneven floors and walls.
At this point we “rough in” the plumbing and electrical lines though the walls to where they will eventually connect to your appliances.
This fifth step is simple but critical. We will bring in a building inspector to verify that everything complies with all codes and regulations so that the job can be completed.
At this point we install the insulation and dry wall and lay out the new floor. This process is called “closing-in” because it finishes off all the openings in your kitchen. While unfurnished, your kitchen should now really start showing progress.
This is when the countertop fabricator measures the tops of your cabinets to begin the fabrication process. Depending on the countertop material this process could take more than a week. While this is being prepared, we will install the wall cabinets and appliances and paint the kitchen’s walls. After the countertops are finished and installed, the tile setter puts in the backsplash tile. Finally, the plumber will connect the faucet and appliances and the electrician installs the lighting.
When the kitchen is complete, we still need to show you how to care for your new kitchen! We will demonstrate how to property clean the cabinetry, tile work and countertops, and how to use your new appliances. We’ll make sure everything’s absolutely perfect one last time and then it’s on to step 9.
