Two Kinds of Black or White Kitchen Cabinets

There are two kinds of white kitchen cabinets that are pretty different from each other. Thermofoil doors are made using a 3/4″ MDF (medium-density fiberboard) panel, with white melamine backs, which are then pressed using a high-quality thermoplastic foil.

Thermofoil doors come in a wide range of solid and wood grain colors. As long as the thermoplastic skin is kept in good shape, the cabinets are easy to clean, and the color remains consistent.

On the other hand, classic painted-white kitchen cabinets are wood – usually maple. Tone variations in painted-white kitchen cabinets are as varied as white and neutral colors at the paint store. There are hundreds of color variations, so make sure to find the right white for you and your kitchen.

Thermofoil Kitchen Cabinets vs. Painted Kitchen Cabinets

Thermofoil looks perfect until there’s a problem, but then it can only be replaced, not fixed. Once the thermoplastic skin has been breached, water can get in and form bubbles beneath the surface. Black or painted-white kitchen cabinets don’t have this problem, but they do have a few of their own. Sunlight can age the underlying wood and change the cabinet’s white tone.

Painted-white kitchen cabinets can suffer from minor scratches that wouldn’t make it through the skin of a Thermofoil cabinet. On the other hand, some minor scratches, dings, and marks are part of the natural distressing of a long-lasting quality cabinet, and people often choose white kitchen cabinets that have been pre-distressed.
