In most of our kitchen design or remodeling projects our clients are interested in kitchen island design. It’s not surprising that kitchen islands have largely supplanted peninsulas, work tables and sometimes even displace the kitchen table. That’s because a kitchen island design creates a design focal point and can draw family members together–to do homework, crafts, or simply to enjoy a glass of wine.
Picture a modern kitchen without a kitchen island and you likely only see one or two family members, spread out, engaged in their own activities. But add a custom kitchen island design and you can imagine preparing dinner on the kitchen island as your kids have a snack and do their homework on the island’s countertop. Or, imagine cooking a meal for friends, and talking and laughing with them as they sit around your custom kitchen island.

Most kitchen island designs are comprised of peninsula-base cabinets, that have access from two sides, or back-to-back base cabinets. Obviously, the larger your custom kitchen island, the more things can be installed in it: sinks, appliances, storage, and more.
The ideal space requirements surrounding a custom kitchen island design are 48″ on one side and 42″ on one of the other sides. This requires an immense kitchen, but don’t panic! Typically we design with 36″ on three sides and 42″ on the other and this provides ample space. If you’d like your kitchen to be the heart of your home for family and friends, you should look into a custom kitchen island with similar measurements.
Cabinet manufacturers, like Dura Supreme Cabinetry and Medallion Cabinetry, caught onto custom kitchen island design trends and created the components our designers needed to design striking freestanding kitchen island plans. Because these versatile islands are like freestanding furniture, they can easily be adapted to your functional needs.
These custom kitchen island elements also add high style and a luxuriant touch to your kitchen. For example, a handcrafted, freestanding custom kitchen islands by Jay Rambo,
the owner a kitchen designer with whom we often work, is not only a piece of furniture, but a piece of art. These custom kitchen island elements can add high style and a sense of luxury to your kitchen even as it adds function as a gathering and work space.
