Small dramatic home additions Bethesda MD

The kitchen was impossibly thin almost like a runway. I could touch the counter top on both sides of the room it was so thin. When the home owner Summan told me she wanted a kitchen island I could not withhold a chuckle. The length was just as much a problem at 24 feet you would need roller skates to go from the refrigerator to the oven. Not an impossible design problem many galley kitchens in DC are long and thin but long might be 10 or 12 feet not twice as long. The style of the home was “California Contemporary” built in the early 70’s. The peak of the roof was just inside and above the kitchen. The ceiling then was almost 14′ tall making the kitchen more like a long cavern than galley.

Surrounded Bethesda MD kitchen home additions?

It did not take long to start thinking of making the space wider but the kitchen was surrounded. There was a dining and family room on one side of the kitchens length and a garage on the other. On the short side a foyer on one end and and out side wall on the other. When we are looking at home additions, kitchen addition possibilities, out side walls are clearly looked at first. Adding to the only outside wall would have simply made the kitchen longer. A design outcome no one was interested in.

Why not put this Bethesda Home Addition inside the garage!

The garage had no rooms above it. Yet the cathedral roof began just before the garage wall. In order for the roof to finally end the garage was pretty deep. With both cars in the garage the home owner had lined the entire back wall of the garage with shelves 2 feet deep. There was all manner of boxes and bikes and toys between the cars and the shelves. Long story short we expanded into the garage three feet.

Sometimes you just have to think out side of the box. Other times you have to think in the box!
