Home Addition Design Build Tips
Eight Tips on How to Make Your Dream Home Addition a Reality
At Signature Kitchens, Additions & Baths, we keep these eight factors in mind as we design build home addition for our clients in the DC metro area. You should too.
1. Consider the Neighborhood’s Character
To create a home addition that reflects your neighborhood’s distinct character, you need to understand its unique personality. What makes houses from Bethesda, Capitol Hill and Old Town Alexandria different from each other? What is it about Georgetown that makes the neighborhood stand out from others?
2. Think of the Surroundings to the home addition
When we are retained under a design build agreement to design a home addition, our designer will consider your property’s orientation to the sunrise and sunset, shade, your neighbors’ homes, the street, and more. Your home addition can either block and hide, or expose and accentuate the surrounding environment.
3. Select a Style that Fits
Sometimes homeowners get excited about the prospect of an addition and think of it as a chance to design the home they never had. We try to design home additions to be either indistinguishable from the house upon which it is built, or different but complementary. Your home addition doesn’t need to look identical to your house, but it should fit in with its style.
4. Give it “Good Bones”
“Good bones” describes a house that is structurally sound. A well engineered home is absolutely critical, especially if you may sell your house at some point. Make sure your addition has good bones.
5. Materials Matter
Selecting materials for your home addition whether it’s the roof, windows, doors or siding, is important because they’re hard to change later. Think about curb appeal when selecting materials for the exterior. And when choosing materials for the interior, consider how colors and textures can enhance a room’s ambiance.
6. Create a Reflection of You
A home addition should reflect your personality and lifestyle. Your family’s activities, rituals, habits and passions should inform the project’s design.
7. Have Fun!
Our design build clients often choose relatively traditional home addition designs. Sometimes it’s not worth taking the risk of a radical design choice. But you can have a bit of fun with your home addition. This could mean anything from installing a fire-engine-red range in an otherwise conservative kitchen, to designing a special niche in a wall for family photos.
8. Get to Know Your Designer/Remodeler
Your design build remodeling contractor will be a big part of your life during your house addition project. Get to know them! At Signature Kitchens, Additions & Baths, we enjoy building relationships with our clients as much as we enjoy building a house addition. That’s because the more we understand you, the better we can reflect who you are in your home addition’s design. You should expect nothing less from a company that builds your home addition.
